S&P 500 (ES), based on the S&P 500 index, is a stock market index that tracks the performance of 500 leading companies listed on US stock exchanges, together with the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) and Nasdaq composite, and covers approximately 80% of available market capitalisation. The S and P 500 index is a highly-watched equity index and is considered a benchmark for the US stock market and the wider economy.
